Congratulations to Chris Robles and Lauren Zepeda for winning awards at the annual Jersey City Medical Center/RWJBarnabas Health Hudson County STEM Showcase!

The students' research projects scored in the top 10 percentile and brought home gold and special awards:

Christopher Robles: Gold Medal Winner and the NASA Earth System Science Award
Lauren Zepeda: Silver Medal Winner

Dr. Krista Welz was their Independent Scientific Research Honors instructor. In order to compete at the annual STEM Showcase, students must be enrolled in the class. The students are challenged to complete original and independent scientific research that is characteristic of graduate college-level courses. Students first conduct a literature review of their interest. Then, they develop a research proposal, generate a statement of the problem, goals, research questions and hypotheses, collaborate with content-area experts, create prototypes of their research solution, design surveys and interview questions, collect and analyze data, and finally present their original research at the Jersey City Medical Center/RWJBarnabas Health STEM Showcase. Students work toward the completion of an extensive scholarly research paper and oral defense. This course places great emphasis on rigorous academic reading, writing, designing, and presenting.
