Congratulations to Geovanny Flores Gonzalez on his participation in the Congressional Art Competition for the 8th District. Each spring, high school students from across the country participate in this nationwide art competition hosted by the United States House of Representatives. This year’s competition is especially competitive, with students from schools such as Jose Marti STEM Academy in Union City and McNair Academic High School in Jersey City also participating.
Geovanny is a talented young artist who will graduate this year and attend Parsons School of Design in the fall. He has been creating mixed media artwork that showcases both creativity and strong conceptual thinking. Recently, he has been working on a series of mixed media paintings inspired by the traditional Mexican card game La Lotería.
The artwork he selected for the competition continues this theme. In his painting, he reimagines "El Bailarín" (The Male Dancer) and "La Bailarina" (The Female Dancer) cards by transforming them into an image of the sun and moon dancing together. The sun, painted in warm reds, oranges, and yellows, represents his mother, while the moon, rendered in cool blues, represents his father. The contrasting colors create a powerful visual balance and emotional connection within the piece.
We wish Geovanny the best of luck as he advances to the next phase of the competition. Rob Menendez will judge the 8th District’s artwork and announce the winners sometime next week. The winning artwork will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel, which connects the congressional office buildings to the United States Capitol.
