Philosophy
ESL DEPARTMENT
We are aware that students from non-English speaking backgrounds constitute
a continually growing proportion of our school population. Therefore, we, in
the ESL Program aim to help these students maintain a sense of personal
dignity of their own culture and acquire a knowledge of the American English
language and culture. This will enable them to function to the best of their
abilities in the monolingual classroom and country in which they now reside.
Ours is a four-fold program of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in
English which is inseparable from another goal - that of orienting the students
toward cultural patterns of behavior. We recognize that each individual is
unique and that many forces determine the pace and rate of his/her learning.
With this in mind, the ESL Program aims to use all materials, resources,
techniques and methods at its disposal to accomplish these goals.
