English 1

The North Bergen School Districts English Language Arts course of study is aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards to ensure that the standards described are what students should know and be able to do upon completion of a thirteen-year public school education. ELA curriculum is designed in collaboration with lead teachers, content area supervisors, and district administration.

The ELA curriculum is evaluated and updated periodically to ensure that all students are exposed to high academic standards and are gaining the skills necessary to thrive in the 21st century.  To prepare students for college and careers while developing students' proficiency, embedded in the curricula are critical thinking and problem solving skills, conducting research, utilization of technology, collaborative projects, engaging in cultural literacy, demonstrating leadership, and introduction to wellness concepts.

Students in English 1 will be introduced to the elements of a short story.  They will analyze different short stories and identify specific literary elements that are utilized.  Students will also learn poetic devices through their close reading of short form poetry and the epic poem, The Odyssey.  Students will also learn how to form a thesis statement and commence writing a short research paper using MLA format.  Students will also learn to distinguish the different dramatic elements through their close reading of Shakespeare's tragic drama Romeo and Juliet.
